Volto
Benzoni
Volto means face, and Benzoni created this artwork in collaboration with glassblowers on the glassmaking island of Murano, Venice. But how does such a process work? Benzoni provides the design, while the glassblowers perform the physical labor. Colored and clear layers of glass are blown over one another, layer by layer. Then comes the defining moment of the design: a layer of leaf gold is placed on the glass surface, after which Benzoni draws the face into the glass. The overall shape creates a face within the form of the head, ensuring that each work remains entirely unique.
