Marabous I & II

Willem Lenssinck

Willem initially created the Marabous in ceramic for a retirement home in Alphen aan de Rijn. He had to create a ceramic panel on five floors, from the plinth to the ceiling. These are featured in the book on pages 228-231. They are so-called orientation panels, allowing people to see if they were on the correct floor when they stepped out of the elevator. Avifauna is also located in Alphen, which served as a source of inspiration. On the side, you can see birds displaying courtship behavior alongside the elderly enjoying a party. During installation, Willem observed the seniors gossiping about each other. The architect requested that he create a gift for the entrance, which became the Marabous with their beautiful bald heads, gossiping and whispering. There are also two versions of this piece. The small one was made first and then scanned. After this, the large version was cast in bronze. The sculpture is extremely complex to cast due to its shapes. Enclosed is also a video of the making of the wax model.
