Eug\u00e8ne Brands \u00e9tait un peintre n\u00e9erlandais qui a consacr\u00e9 son art \u00e0 l’imagination de la libert\u00e9, du mouvement et du cosmos. Apr\u00e8s sa formation \u00e0 l’\u00c9cole des arts appliqu\u00e9s d’Amsterdam (aujourd’hui : Acad\u00e9mie Rietveld), il a commenc\u00e9 comme graphiste et dessinateur publicitaire. Cependant, son c\u0153ur \u00e9tait dans la peinture, o\u00f9 il pouvait suivre son intuition sans commanditaires. <\/p>\n
En 1948, il a rejoint le mouvement exp\u00e9rimental et avant-gardiste Cobra, qui visait \u00e0 lib\u00e9rer l’art des r\u00e8gles et des conventions. Les \u0153uvres color\u00e9es et ludiques de Brands, inspir\u00e9es entre autres par les dessins d’enfants, s’y int\u00e9graient parfaitement. Il admirait l’\u00e9nergie de Cobra, mais \u00e9tait agac\u00e9 par le comportement de groupe et le dogmatisme des manifestes et des r\u00e9unions. Pour Brands, la peinture \u00e9tait une qu\u00eate intime, non une lutte collective, et il est parti peu apr\u00e8s. Il a choisi un chemin solitaire. Son leitmotiv est devenu \u00ab Panta Rhei \u00bb \u2013 tout coule, une id\u00e9e issue de la philosophie grecque d’H\u00e9raclite : rien n’est permanent, tout change constamment. Pour Brands, ce n’\u00e9tait pas une pens\u00e9e abstraite, mais une attitude de vie et un principe artistique. Dans de nombreuses peintures et gouaches portant ce titre, il a fait fusionner couleur et forme en champs vibrants, comme s’il voulait rendre visible le mouvement \u00e9ternel de l’univers. La musique, les mythes, le cosmos et l’imagination enfantine se sont r\u00e9unis dans ses \u0153uvres d’art \u00e0 la fois ludiques et myst\u00e9rieuses. <\/p>\n
Avec son langage visuel lyrique et cosmique, Brands est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un po\u00e8te parmi les peintres. Il ne recherchait pas un style fixe ou des contours durs, mais laissait son travail respirer et couler. Il a ainsi donn\u00e9 une voix unique \u00e0 l’art d’apr\u00e8s-guerre aux Pays-Bas : une voix douce, po\u00e9tique et pourtant radicalement novatrice. De nombreuses peintures, dessins et gouaches de Brands font partie de la collection du Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. <\/p>\n
