Sunrise II
Willem Lenssinck
Following the success of the Sunshine, Willem created a variation. However, sometimes a new sculpture emerges by accident. The foundry wanted to attempt to cast a larger, one-meter Sunshine. Occasionally, the bronze casting process encounters technical difficulties—temperature, casting speed, modeling, etc.—and does not go as planned. The sculpture had so many holes that it was deemed a failure. Willem intended to have the sculpture destroyed, but after a year, it was still on a workbench. He took the sculpture to his studio and sawed off the bottom. The top part was reasonably good and quite interesting. He designed this base with a crescent moon, allowing the sculpture to move back and forth slightly. It is as if the woman is waking up, getting out of bed, and stretching.
