Keeper of the Stone

Lika Mutal
Keeper of the Stone can be read almost literally. A large, robust stone encloses and protects a smaller, darker stone that lies in the sculpture's pouch, as if one stone is taking care of the other. The exterior is rough and untouched, shaped by time and nature, while the opening has been deliberately crafted, guiding the gaze inward. As in much of Lika Mutal's work, this piece is about attention, protection, and connection. The stone is not dead material, but a carrier of memory and energy. This sculpture embodies a silent, primal relationship: preserving what is vulnerable and acknowledging that even stone can carry, protect, and preserve.
