Jolly Jumper

Willem Lenssinck
At the beginning of his career, Willem created many models in ceramics. A beloved theme was, and still is, the horse. The problem with ceramic horses is the thin legs. They are long, thin and fragile. Even in Greek antiquity we see horses with strange tree trunks or supports that support the horse. Willem solved this by abstracting the horse. In such a way that the horse transforms into a machine and the legs become a metal frame with wheels. On the hindquarters are stylized horse withers. The design is simply what you see in the automobile industry. Speed depicted by turning legs into a wheel. Just like an airplane. It flies from speed. It rises up and must land again. The title of the sculpture comes from the Lucky Luke comic strip. His cheerful horse is also called: Jolly Jumper. Later the ceramic model was enlarged using 3D techniques and cast in bronze-neusilver at Noack in Berlin.
