Dancing Guard

Willem Lenssinck
Willem Lenssinck often elaborates on earlier creations. Following 'De Grote Wachter' (The Great Watcher), the subsequent sculpture needed to be more challenging and dynamic. An artist invariably asks: what can and do you wish to express? But also, how. During a holiday in France, Willem's children collected various insects. Upon closer inspection, insects possess a skeletal structure. This observation, combined with a shield, a spear, and a tai chi movement, inspired a dancing guardian. Executing this on a large scale proved quite challenging. Lenssinck is the first sculptor to utilize 3D techniques to scale down or enlarge his oeuvre. While this sculpture is initially 3D printed, this process alone often yields a 'lifeless' form. It is brought back to life through the sculptor's sublime, hours-long grinding work and subsequently finished with a unique patina.
