Big Guardian II
Willem Lenssinck
Willem Lenssinck was commissioned by an architectural firm to create a sculpture for a niche in their building. The intention was to place the sculpture in front of the niche, like a hermit crab in its shell. This makes the lance and shield the first things that stand out: a circle and a line, the basis of every architect. At that time – the 1980s – there were many squatter riots in the Netherlands, so the association with a riot policeman or special agent was quickly made. The sculpture was rejected and sold to someone who did like it. Coincidentally, Willem's best friend.
