Ballerina with Three Arms
Juan Garcia Ripollés
The title Bailarina con tres brazos translates to: Dancer with three arms. With this apparent simplicity, Ripollés suggests movement and time simultaneously. The extra arm functions as a trace of motion, as if multiple moments coincide. The body is constructed from rusty steel plates, yet together they form round, soft shapes that depict rhythm and balance. The head, small and clear in form, acts as a still center point around which all movement circles. A fun detail: she is wearing typical Spanish dancing shoes, perfect for flamenco or perhaps even tango!
