Untitled
Klaas & Brockmeier
In 'Untitled,' a female figure stands before a niche. In art, this is often seen as a place of shelter and concentration. To her right, a second, lighter figure is outlined in the layers of paint, possibly a child with something resembling a kite. This apparition does not seem so much depicted as remembered or imagined. As in many collaborative artworks by Uschi Klaas & Heinrich Brockmeier, this invites us to see space between present and past, or between seeing and reading. The meaning remains deliberately open: the work invites association or interpretation. Since the Renaissance, there has been Paragone, meaning a rivalry between painting and sculpture. The question was: which is better? Klaas and Brockmeier show that the question no longer needs to be asked. Together, they are stronger than anything. One plus one is not two, but three.
