Nuclear Zoo
Willem Lenssinck
At the time Willem Lenssinck created this sculpture, there were quite a few science fiction writers, including Brian Aldiss. Their gruesome stories are about what happens after the Big Boom, after the nuclear bombs. One of those stories was about the deformities that arise after the radiation. And those deformities were dumped in the woods. They didn't even bother to bury them. That's when Willem came up with a mechanical vulture, just like in India where vultures clean up corpses or carcasses. They live off it. Hence the bare neck, which allows them to get into the carcass. Later, the model was enlarged to life-size. Willem now wants to do something different with the sculpture. He wants to make the body matte black, cover the beak with gold leaf, and color the atom logos in bright orange. Also, a higher pedestal so that it becomes less confrontational and more distant. It is now quite confrontational: In your Face.
