From the Earth to the World
Lika Mutal
'From the Earth to the World' consists of two robust blocks of natural stone standing upright, facing each other. The exteriors are rough and untouched, as if the stone has just been lifted from the earth. Between the two parts, a narrow passage opens, an opening that invites you to look through and to think. In that opening, Mutal has formed a dark, smoothly shaped element that contrasts with the rough skin of the stone.
This work demonstrates how Mutal listened to her stones with great attention. The stone is not forced but followed. The opening feels like a transition: from inside to outside, from earth to world. That also explains the title. As in much of her work, the sculpture refers to ancient, natural forces and to the human being who moves between them.
