Bella Donna I & II
Willem Lenssinck
One of the earliest sculptures from Willem Lenssinck's bronze oeuvre. A female figure with a double relief, created in response to a televised ballet performance. A dancer was supporting herself on her elbow in an almost impossible position. Willem first made the small version, followed by the large version. The latter was made possible in part by Willem's intense search for technical possibilities to accelerate the sculpting process, especially the creation of plaster models or cores. This results in a lifeless model that subsequently acquires the sculptor's signature through extensive planing, sanding, and grinding. The real work, therefore, remains with the artist. The large version was eventually cast in German silver at Noack in Berlin.
