Guardian X – I
Willem Lenssinck
Willem Lenssinck's oeuvre features many watchmen who appear more like stylized statues than human beings. He plays with this idea. Is it a Buddha belly or perhaps a soldier's shield? Every watchman must stand for a long time. To relax the foot, there is a handy method: briefly standing on the side. Many sculptors create huddled figures, primarily to express emotion. On the other hand, it is technically very difficult to create an open sculpture like this one. Lenssinck uses an armature of an X inside the sculpture, hence the title. There are three versions that demonstrate the sculptor's technical quest and development. The first Warrior X (100 cm high) was still hand-modeled in clay, then cast in bronze. The second and largest version, Warrior II (approx. 305 cm), was enlarged in Paris by Fa. Bousquets and sold to Berlusconi at TEFAF. Finally, the small model, Warrior III, was created using a computer. A scan and a good printer provided a new core, which, after processing (!), allowed a new sculpture to be cast.
