L’empire des Sens
Willem Lenssinck
Sometimes an artwork emerges from working in reverse order. Sculptor Willem Lenssinck encountered this pedestal at the stonemason. An objet trouvé, as pedestals are typically round or square, but certainly not triangular. Then the question arises: what do you create to complement it? As a figurative sculptor, he conceived an elegant female form. Simultaneously, the title references a 1976 Japanese film. The female protagonist radically claims her own sexuality, in an era and culture where female desires were traditionally suppressed in Japan. The woman's self-awareness is fully expressed here. A classical sculpture with a modern & contemporary touch.
