Sunshine II
Willem Lenssinck
The first Sunshine was approximately 30-40 cm. Willem's wife, Catherine, posed on a pedestal as a model, and he sketched her. He sculpted a woman with voluptuous forms, forms he had missed so much in his first marriage. It was an ode to love. The idea was to create a female figure for a swimming pool in Lunteren. When walking past the sculpture, one should not be able to bump into anything. Therefore, the front is as flat as possible, a relief, combined with a high relief on the back. From the garden, the sculpture could be seen through the windows in the indoor pool. This required large forms to be visible. Two combinations of visual language in one sculpture, high and low relief, had never been done before. The one-meter sculpture was made by Bousquets in Paris, as well as a 1.8-meter model. The largest Sunshine is 3 meters. It was the first attempt to create a core using a computer (CADCAM) and milling machine. The sculpture was full of bugs that had to be repaired. But even then, it was astonishing what such a primitive system could already do.
