Sunrise I

Willem Lenssinck
Due to the success of the Sunshine, after it had sold out, Willem created a variant. This sculpture came about by accident. The foundry wanted to attempt casting a larger Sunshine of one meter. Sometimes casting doesn't always go well due to technical circumstances or the shape of a sculpture. However, there were so many holes in it that it had failed. Willem wanted to have the sculpture destroyed, but after a year the sculpture was still lying on a workbench. He took the sculpture to his studio and sawed off the bottom. The top was reasonably good and very interesting. He conceived this base with a half moon in it, allowing the sculpture to move slightly back and forth. It is as if the woman is waking up, getting out of bed, and stretching.
