The title Panta Rhei refers to Heraclitus' idea that everything is constantly flowing and changing. This concept touches on Eugène Brands' artistic attitude, in which movement, becoming, and inner energy are central. Although Brands is associated with the COBRA movement, his work is more contemplative and cosmic in nature. In this gouache, flowing, organic forms and an intense but harmonious use of color express a sense of constant transformation. Panta Rhei balances between spontaneity and reflection. It shows how Brands shapes the idea of movement into a poetic image.
