In Landscape II, Eugène Brands demonstrates how to evoke an entire world with limited resources. The work appears simple: soft color planes, a few clouds, a tree shape, and a few lines. However, this simplicity is characteristic of Brands. He does not paint a real landscape but rather a memory or feeling. The gouache paint gives the image a matte, velvety texture. The colors are light and transparent: powdery pink, pale green, soft yellow, and a bright red circle like a sun. Everything seems to be in the making. As if nature is cautiously announcing itself. The explanation is on the back. Brands noted: ‘the first day of spring’. Landscape II is not an exuberant spring but a beginning. The work has something of a first walk outside after winter. When you don't quite know what you see yet, but you feel that something new is beginning.
